In the future…demand will cause tonnage, tonnage will determine ship size, and ship size will become a major influence upon depth of water provided (in ports). [1]
Shipowners in captive (industrial) trades have different views of transportation costs to those held by owners who are involved in ‘pure’ shipping. While the latter may use Required Freight Rate (RFR) as an input to their project-selection process, the former prefer the Economic Costs of Transport (ECT) to be their measure of merit. ECT, which incorporates inventory holding costs, gives project selection another dimension. It enables owners to optimize the carrying capacity of their vessels.
