The State Transport Authority of South Australia (STA), in common with most other public transport authorities, has suffered from a lack of adequate information to assist management in planning and policy issues relating to the services it offers. While STA has developed corporate performance indicators and specific indicators for use by individual managers, information on the performance of services according to mode, route, day of week or time of day was lacking. To help remedy this deficiency, STA has developed a Routes and Services Information System (ROSIS). This system provides analyses of resource utilization, costs, patronage and revenue according to service segment, i.e. by mode, route, day of week and time of day. Various indicators of performance are derived for these segments. This paper describes the three main modules developed in ROSIS for assessing service performance, gives a selection of results for key performance indicators derived from the system, and shows how these indicators are being used to assist in better management of STA's public transport services.
