The naval and maritime dimension of the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and the Dnieper river holds immense historical significance for understanding the geopolitical evolution of eastern Europe, particularly in relation to the Russians, Poles, Crimeans and Ukrainians. The historical processes unfolding in the Dnieper delta and its heartland played a pivotal role in shaping geopolitical power dynamics across eastern Europe between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Ukraine’s naval Cossack heritage finds its roots in the historical Cossack era and closely resembles the ‘tactic of the mosquito fleet’. A more precise term for this asymmetric naval warfare is suggested as the ‘tactic of the Cossack fleet’. This article aims to explore the historical context of Ukrainian naval strategy and tactics, drawing valuable lessons from history to better understand the geopolitical and naval dynamics of war in Ukraine, particularly in the Black Sea and Dnieper Basin.
