The paper considers the propulsion of a 12 500TEU container ship in conceptual terms and builds on the earlier propulsion studies that were published by Lloyd’s Register in 2001/2. The cases for single and twin screw hull forms are considered as well as the various trade-offs that inevitably form part of the design process. Conclusions are reached about the feasibility of achieving an acceptable propulsion solution. Within the discussion the problems of rudder erosion are also addressed. The mechanical propulsion aspects are examined from the points of view of propulsion efficiency, the achievement of acceptable shaft-line vibration behaviour and the static and dynamic alignment characteristics
