To assist traffic managers in evaluating whether a traffic signal is needed at an intersection we have developed an Expert System using the fuzzy set theory. It is called “The Fuzzy Expert System.” This system can handle uncertain and vague input data such as changing traffic volume and pedestrian safety, whereas other expert systems using traditional logic cannot.
