By the end of the Ch'ing dynasty, several important railroads had been constructed, such as the Peking-Mukden line, the Peking-Hankow line, the Tientsin-Pukow line, the Peking-Suiyuan line, the Shanghai-Nanking line, and the Canton-Kowloon line. Several aspects of railroads in China have been studied, but few have dealt with the effects of railway transportation.1 Most materials concerning railroads in China are available now, and it is time for us to evaluate the effects of railroad transportation. This is the purpose of this paper. As the topic is too broad to be dealt with in a short paper, this paper is confined to evaluating the direct effects of railroad transportation.
