This paper reports the findings of a survey of 1,297 respondents traveling by a low-cost airline from a regional airport in New Zealand. The research is thus contextualized within a framework of trans-Tasman scheduling. The article covers three issues: (a) an importance rating of attributes of airline service, (b) a similar assessment of airports, and (c) usage of regional tourism attractions by inbound passengers. The findings confirm the importance of low fares as a reason for patronage but also notes the importance attributed to many features of the airport, including check in procedures. It also notes that impacts upon local tourism attractions may be dependent upon airline marketing policies and that an evolutionary process of product development appeared to be symptomatic in the case of trans-Tasman flights.
