The hedonic cross‐sectional regression method has been a rich source of information on the price of urban amenities and disamenities generated by transport facilities. This paper offers the policy‐maker a guide to the origins, principles and critical assumptions of hedonic pricing models before examining the econometric problems involved in the actual measurement of the external effects of transport facilities. A case study demonstrates the technique and its pitfalls. Notwithstanding the problems of measurement, the hedonic regression method is a rewarding avenue of exploration as to the external effects of transport works.
