The results of an experimental investigation into the ultimate hogging strength of a container ship’s hull structures are presented. On the basis of derived similar conversion relationships, a test model is designed to reflect the possible failure modes under hogging moment. Comparisons between the container ship and test model are carried out by linear analysis, non-linear finite element analysis and idealised structural unit method. The collapse modes and stress distributions for plating and longitudinals are discussed. Welding residual stresses and initial distortions are simulated approximately in ABAQUS code, and the results of ultimate strength obtained by the arc-length method are consistent with the experimental results.
