The paper discusses the hierarchical modeling of a ship hull making efficient use of Bayesian probability nets and of hierarchical Bayes methods to update the condition states of hull components. The hierarchical hull modeling allows to develop a quantitative risk assessment model associated with the degradation of the ship hull. Hierarchical Bayes models are discussed both for the case of spatial conditional independence and for the more general case where spatial correlation is considered.
