Among various types of maritime accidents, ship grounding has significant impacts on the safety, the environment, and the economy. Existing research often focuses on the influence of single or multiple independent factors on grounding accidents but lacks in-depth analysis of the interactions between these factors. Additionally, traditional accident causation analysis methods struggle to capture the complex interdependencies among these factors. To address this limitation, this study explores the intrinsic connections between factors in ship grounding accidents based on complex network theory. By examining four categories of risk factors—human, ship, environment, and management—a ship grounding accident network model was constructed, consisting of 37 nodes and 113 edges. By calculating the network's characteristic parameters, we quantitatively analyzed the interactions among causative factors. The results indicate that inadequate risk estimation, non-adherence to duty assignment protocol, driving while fatigued, ship drifting anchor and equipment failure are the primary causes of ship grounding accidents. Furthermore, it was found that the ship grounding causation network exhibits characteristics of a scale-free network with small-world properties, indicating significant chain effects among the causative factors. Effective management and control of key causative factors can significantly prevent the occurrence of ship grounding accidents. The research results can provide a reference for improving shipping management levels.
