With the advancement of autonomousAutonomous and unmanned systems, there is potential to utilize these systems to conduct inspectionsInspection of hazardousHazardous facilities. This implementation can reduce human exposure to dangerous conditions and a more efficient inspectionInspection process. A systematicSystematic literature review of this topic was conducted for this study. Keywords “facility,” “autonomousAutonomous,” and “inspectionInspection” were used in searches of four databases, GoogleGoogle Scholar, ScopusScopus, SpringerLink, and Web of Science. MetadataMetadata of relevant scientific papers was extracted to analyze trends. Tools, such as BibExcelBibexcel, Harzing'sHarzing Publish or Perish, MAXQDAMaxqda, MendeleyMendeley, and VOSviewer, were utilized to conduct co-citationCo-citation, content (co-occurrence), and author analyses. Additional content analysis and an extended lexicalLexical search were conducted utilizing papers found to have a strong link through the co-citationCo-citation analysis. This study shows that autonomousAutonomous systems for inspectionInspection are a growing field, with the current use of these systems showing effectiveness in the oil, gas, and underwater spaces. A promising area is implementing these systems in hazardousHazardous facilities where human riskRisk is high, or safety controls are burdensome. Current research and investments show additional promise towards more effective implementation, but the continued publication of current system advancements and effectiveness are needed to promote widespread use.
