The cooperative attitude control problem of multiple spacecraft performing the ground target staring task is studied. It brings forward a challenging problem, that is how to cooperatively control a spacecraft cluster in which each agent has its own unique time-varying attitude to track, and meanwhile seeks to accomplish a common mission goal. In this work, a fleet of spacecraft is demanded to observe a single ground target, and differences in the required attitude states exist due to the separation of the locations in a cluster. In response to the control challenge, a multi-reference decentralized cooperative attitude controller is proposed by taking into account the attitude errors of one’s own and those of the other agents in the cluster. The structure of the controller is comparatively neat and simple, and good performances in terms of global stability, rapid convergence, and high accuracy are observed. Moreover, strong robustness is shown in cases in which the communication failure happens among agents. The amount of information exchange is on a limited scale due to the simplicity of the controller.
