Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are aircraft that are guided either remotely by humans using a remote control or autonomously by an intelligent computer-based autopilot system. Recently, UAVs have been used to perform essential roles in critical sectors, such as the entertainment or industrial sector; these roles include responding to security or emergency situations, controlling natural disasters, delivering medicines. However, UAVs have vulnerabilities that criminals can use to exploit the UAV system, abuse it, and perform numerous types of attacks. In this chapter, the security challenges for UAV system communications are discussed, and their security vulnerabilities are addressed. Details of potential threats and attacks exploiting UAV system communications and their effect on individuals’ lives, privacy and society are discussed. Throughout the chapter, countermeasures to prevent and detect these attacks are demonstrated.
