Rising amount of air traffic forces airports to expand and improve their infrastructure and equipment, also radio navigation aids, which are used for approach and landing of aircraft. GBAS Landing System (GLS) is a new landing system, which is based on satellite usage and requires specific ground-based stations. Taking into considerations GLS ground-based equipment siting criteria, a plan of GLS installation at Riga International Airport has been created. Introduction of Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) would open new possibilities of constructing approach tracks in a way to reduce noise pollution and fuel consumption, offer varying final descend angle from 3° to 3.2°, give opportunity to make curved approaches to avoid densely populated areas and increase airport traffic during low visibility operations, mainly by getting rid of requirements to keep clear sensitive area of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) system, thus reducing aircraft separation. In fact, as rather large Local Object Consideration Area (LOCA) antenna sensitive area at Riga International airport is required, it is impossible to locate antennas ensuring minimum LOCA intermediate area clear. Consequently, Outer LOCA selective masking procedure is unavoidable. GLS is a perspective system and a real candidate for ILS substitution, which might lead to a reduction of maintenance costs, increase in air traffic flow and safety improvements.
