In order to organize aircraft instrument approaches and departures to or from an airport, Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and Standard Arrival Routes (STARs) are used. In Riga Flight Information Region (FIR) a waypoint LAPSA, which joins the beginning and end of a SID and STAR, is located on the border between West and Approach control sectors, consequently, if one aircraft has departed from Riga International Airport (EVRA) and the other is approaching the same airport via waypoint LAPSA, then there is an additional risk for air traffic control (ATC) to have two aircraft with changing vertical profile (one- climbing, the other one- descending) over one waypoint. To determine, whether particular SIDs and STARs shall be changed and organized in a way, so that they do not go via one waypoint, this analysis has been done. The results from May 2019 until August 2019 have been summarized in a table showing number of aircraft pairs which have crossed the waypoint LAPSA within 5, 5–15, 15–20 and 20–30 min intervals.
