Two-wheelers, especially bikes, are one of the popular vehicles in city transport. While riding bikes, the rider uses hands to balance the vehicle and to operate various hand controls. These activities during riding cause numbness, pain, discomfort or weakness in the hand regions of the rider and it affects the hand strength. The study aims to evaluate hand discomfort and hand strength during bike riding. In the initial stage of the study, a qualitative evaluation of hand discomfort was done among bike riders using Cornell Hand Discomfort Questionnaire. Then, a quantitative evaluation of hand strength was carried out before and after the riding trials. Handgrip dynamometer and pinch gauge were used for evaluations. The experimental trials were conducted in different road conditions and hand gripping conditions. The results showed a high discomfort (41.98%) at the ring finger, middle finger and index finger region of the left hand. This discomfort may be due to the frequent use of clutch during bike riding. This is also evident from the significant (p < 0.05) decrease of pinch strength in the left hand of the rider. The quantitative results showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in grip strength of both hands after riding. This increase may be due to the stretch reflex of hand muscles. These variations in hand strength were found lesser in riding trials with hand gloves and better road conditions. This study reveals that the usage of hand gloves supports the hand activities of bike riders.
