A test section of concrete overlay was constructed and monitored for one year to evaluate the feasibility as a rehabilitation alternative for deteriorated concrete pavement in Korea. The test section of 2-lane 290m long on 88 Highway near Jirisan I/C included 25cm unbonded and 6cm and 10cm bonded concrete overlays. High early-strength slag cement was used in the overlay concrete to minimize the traffic blocking time. Performance surveys were performed in 4 different seasons for the following year. The survey included structural capacity(deflection), crack, delamination, load transfer efficiency and slab movement at joints.

Findings from the surveys were summarized as follows: (1) Concrete overlay showed good performance for one year. No distresses were found in the unbonded overlay section. Bonded overlay also showed a good performance except for a little delamination and several cracks. (2) After overlay, the maximum deflection was reduced by 40–60% depend upon the thickness of the overlay. (3) Nondoweled sections showed a significantly low load transfer efficiency especially at the low slab temperatures. (4) In old slabs with dowel bar, 2.6% reduction of the load transfer efficiency was observed for each 1°C drop in slab temperature. (5) Bonded overlay showed much less slab movement at joints than unbonded overlay. (6) Overlay concrete should be sawed at the position right above the joints created by full depth repair of the old slabs in order to avoid unwanted cracks in the bonded overlay.
