When a passenger in a moving vehicle does not anticipate the direction of the vehicle, he or she is exposed to experience motion sickness symptoms. This motion sickness symptom might worsen if the passenger is completely immersed in activities unrelated to driving. Based on the mismatch sensory theory of motion sickness, the severity of motion sickness symptoms can be lessened if the passenger receives early information about the movement of the vehicle. This study explores the implementation of haptic modality in delivering immediate manoeuvres of a vehicle (turning to the left and right) to the passenger when engaging in non-driving-related activities. Nine participants took part in this proof of concept study, and the results suggest that the haptic modality prototype is effective in providing the necessary information.
