The purpose of this study is to discuss about a program that promotes the realization of Limited Traffic Zones around the schools. The goal is to have traffic-free zones to facilitate pedestrian mobility where the negative traffic impacts are reduced. Past researches and implementation include increasing accessibility and road safety around the schools and reducing risk in school buildings to better withstand earthquakes by means of evacuation. This research adds to existing research proposing an intervention for schools as part of a structured system of interventions for sustainable development which also contribute to the reduction of CO2. A real implementation in a region of Southern Italy is analyzed.
The result can be interpreted as a part of the reducing traffic impacts stronger where there is a high concentration of people who suffer them, such as the historic centers of urban areas. In these places, there are often school buildings.
In this way, the research shows how it is possible to plan and implement interventions to improve well-being and protect the environment in a general policy oriented toward sustainable development, which are easy to implement, transferable, and inexpensive.
