In 1960, the inaugural instance of space travel can be attributed to U.S. Air Force Captain Joseph Kittinger’s participation in the “Man High” project. Kittinger ascended to a height of 20 miles above the earth’s surface via a balloon, penetrated the stratosphere, and subsequently descended by jumping (Larsen PB, Sweeney JC, and Gillick JE (2005) Evolution of the Aviation Industry. In: Aviation law: cases, laws, and related sources. Brill Nijhoff, pp 1–33). This event has since been regarded as a significant milestone in the realm of commercial space transportation (Toivonen (2022) Sustainable space tourism: an introduction (vol 3) Channel View Publications).
