Flight Day 3 was a good day, according to those involved in creating and achieving a 'phantom rendezvous' with an imaginary Agena target. Conceived largely by astronaut Buzz Aldrin, this procedure salvaged at least some positive results for the planned Gemini 5 rendezvous objective. The inside story is explained by Ken Young, who was then just 26 years old and the Planning Leader for the Rendezvous Group. The day also saw a more balanced program of experiments for the two astronauts, who were becoming more organized and accustomed - if not totally comfortable - with life in the cramped confines of Gemini 5. There was still a long way to go in the mission, but the fuel cell situation was improving, tasks were being ticked off the revised flight plan, and they had scored well on the phantom rendezvous. This was a confidence boost for a full docking attempt with an Agena during Gemini 6 two months later.
