Parallel Robots, also referred to as Parallel Kinematics Machines (PKM) are mechanisms possessing closed kinematic loops. This fundamental difference to classical serial robots offers significant advantages but necessitates novel approaches to the kinematic and dynamic modeling, synthesis, and control. The closed loop kinematics introduces singularities, which further complicates the motion planning and control. This chapter reviews research and development that was conducted in the last three decades, and presents a tailored approach to kinematics and dynamics modeling. Special attention is paid to the computational aspects and the modularity inherent to PKM. Therewith, model-based control schemes are presented that eventually allow exploiting the dynamic capabilities of PKM. Synthesis methods developed for PKM are summarized. The important issue of kinematic singularities is addressed.
