Abstract The combustion engine continues to play an important role in realizing mobility solutions, while legal requirements calling for lower emissions and consumption make it necessary to advance the technology further. In light of the already high level of development maturity exhibited by the combustion engine, not only do individual components need to be improved; the way in which they integrate and work with each other must also be analyzed.
