Abstract This paper is focused on an application and evaluation of a lane use balancing measure with the variable message signs (VMS) installed on both sides of a carriageway in a bottleneck of a 3-lane section in one direction on a motorway. This is achieved by providing keep-left related messages on the roadside VMS or on the VMS on both sides, and on the entrance ramp to persuade drivers to use the left hand lanes as much as possible. The VMS resulted in slightly more balanced lane use across the carriageway. As a result, it increased the mean capacity and reduced the breakdown probability at the bottleneck.
