With the ISS planned to de-orbit in 2030, there are several commercial efforts to continue a space station presence in low Earth orbit (LEO). One such entrant to the space station race is Vast, a startup company founded by cryptocurrency billionaire Jed McCaleb. Vast, which may feature artificial gravity, will comprise a single module, called Haven-1, which will launch on a Falcon 9. Once in orbit, Haven-1 will support visits of up to four crewmembers at a time and these crewmembers will be launched on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft. Once on board the orbiting habitat, crews will spend a month or so conducting science. The first such visit could happen by August 2025, a date that would place it in orbit ahead of Axiom Space, which plans its own commercial space station in late 2025. In addition to Vast, there is Gravitics, a startup that plans to offer 400 cubic meter habitats that will measure 7.6 meters in diameter, but there are few development schedules or development plans that have been disclosed. In addition to Vast, Axiom, Gravitics and Above Space, there is also Sierra Space’s LIFE (Large Integrated Flexible Environment) which will launch on a conventional rocket and inflate on orbit.
