A thermodynamic model of an ideal internal combustion Rankine cycle (ICRC) is established based on the first law of thermodynamics, and the effect of compression ratio on the performance of ICRC is studied by simulation. The injected water absorbs the combustion heat and evaporates into vapor after being injected at the top dead center. Water vapor becomes part of the working gas, and calculation results show that the in-cylinder pressure increases. Increasing compression ratio of ICRC can improve cycle performance more than traditional cycle. When compression ratio increases from 9.2 to 14 and injection temperature is 120 °C, the thermal efficiency increases from 4.9 % (no water injection) to 22.4 % (injected water mass = 140 mg).
