The paper reviews the recent developments by an engine builder and other service trends, and assesses their impact on lubrication demands. It then presents how these factors and development are translated into lubricant/lubrication development/investigative programme in service.

In particular, this paper discusses the possible impact of the new high pressure cylinder oil lubricator and how it may affect cylinder oil consumption and the general lubricant/ lubrication trend. From the lubrication point of view, this aspect of the paper covers a major change — potentially at least of equal importance to the widely acclaimed anti-polishing rings for 4-stroke engines.

Another point also discussed relates to low sulphur fuel operation and the many questions from engine operators in service. There are emerging concerns that conventional lubricants may not be optimum for engines operating in IMO’s forthcoming Emission Control Areas, requiring use of low sulphur fuels.

The paper reviews the above and other service issues, and from a general point of view, attempts to “crystal-ball” answers to some of the frequently asked questions and propose points for thoughts.
