Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTVs) operation has a significant share in transporting passenger and goods traffic from one place to another. The presence and movement of HTVs influence the traffic flow mix characteristics. This study aims to analyze the dynamic characteristics of HTVs operating with low speed in the high-speed highway lanes. The traffic stream data was acquired using an infra-red sensor device from the highways. A comparison of the speed-flow characteristics was conducted for the HTVs operating in different lanes (median lane and curb lane). The results revealed that a significant speed and flow reduction happens due to the low-speed operation of HTVs on high-speed lanes. The speed-flow characteristics decreased due to the obstructions created by the HTV platoons, which implied that HTVs significantly impacted vehicular traffic. The study’s findings could assist in controlling and managing the highway traffic that experiences a large proportion of HTVs.
