Abstract The reduction of CO2 emissions remains one of the biggest challenges for every engine developer. Downsizing was an appropriated and proven way to reduce fuel consumption in the past, but nowadays it seems to be reaching its limits. In consequence of higher specific performance figures the peak firing pressure is rising and the crank train has to be adapted for the increased load by enlarging bearing dimensions and stiffening the crankshaft. These measures are increasing the engine friction and jeopardizing the benefit of downsizing.
