The material in Chap. 7 is concerned with the development of piloted flight simulators (FS) in the RCbS process. The FS is intended to create an illusion of reality for the crew, so that they are stimulated, react, and perform as if they were in the real aircraft. Achieving ‘sufficient’ realism is challenging and calls for a development and validation discipline matching that described for the FSM. With the pilot-in-the-loop, the term perceptual, or behavioural, fidelity is considered appropriate. The many factors contributing to perceptual fidelity are described.
