Although the D-region ionosphere is an important region for elucidating the coupling between the atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere, there are few observational methods and its characteristics are not fully understood. Due to the limited observational methods for the D-region, observational data cannot be obtained, and the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model is not realistic. However, because very low frequency (VLF, 3–30 kHz)/low frequency (LF, 30–300 kHz) waves are reflected at altitudes of low electron density in the D-region ionosphere, we can know up-down movement at equal electron density by VLF/LF observations. Since 2008, we have established the Asia VLF observation network (AVON) in five Southeast Asian countries (Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam) for the purpose of observing lightning discharges and the D-region ionosphere. In this study, we will present the recent results of D-region ionospheric variations associated with solar flares, solar eclipses, ULF-modulated energetic particle precipitation, earthquakes, and the Tonga volcanic eruption. These VLF/LF wave observations can contribute to space weather.
