The Soviet Union sent six successful spacecraft to Venus in the 1980s. Four spacecraft landed capsules on the surface and two of those returned color photographs of the surface. Two other spacecraft mapped the surface through the clouds by synthetic aperture radar. Two impressive Vega spacecraft deployed landers to the surface and their busses went on to fly by Comet Haley and photograph its nucleus and measure constituents of its corona. Each lander released an instrumented balloon into the clouds before successfully landing on the surface. The balloons were driven 11,000 km around Venus by high winds.
