Water hammer occurs when the pressure waves are created due to sudden closure of a valve or failure of a pump and continue to move back and forth in the pipeline. This could damage the entire pipe system. The present study describes the simulation of these pressure waves in a pipeline using Bentley Hammer V8i software to model the water pipeline and also to analyse the water hammer effect. In this study, check valve (CV) has been used for the prevention of the surge to the pump. The present numerical simulations establish the location of the valve in the pipeline is to be placed near the pump so as to minimize the effects of the water hammer on the pump.
