The deployment of automated mobility is expected to dominate in the coming decades and drastically reshape the mobility landscape. Although we foresee, in the far future, an automated transport system, where automated vehicles will travel within an intelligent, connected and automated road infrastructure, in the meantime there will be a challenging and long transition period with gradually increasing penetration of different levels of automated vehicles, gradually changing road infrastructure. Extensive knowledge exists about the patterns of fatalities and serious injuries resulting from accidents through conventional vehicles. The gradual use of autonomous vehicles (AVs) may result in novel accident scenarios involving other road users, infrastructure, and possibly even other AVs. This study aims to comprehensively review the scientific literature related to the road safety aspects of the deployment of AVs. A bibliometric analysis was carried out utilising 7,738 publications from the last two decades to understand the existing research better. Future trends and thematic areas of research were identified and analyzed. Researchers focus on the deployment of intelligent transport systems (ITS) applications, advanced mobility and safety systems. They prioritize the understanding of how humans interact with autonomous vehicles, address ethical considerations and study the impacts of reshaping streets to ensure the safe deployment of AVs. Through this analysis, researchers and stakeholders can better grasp the current state of knowledge and better understand the dynamics of scientific research in the field of enhancing road safety by the deployment of autonomous vehicle technologies.
