Abstract The orbital location of the planned Galileo system is severe and highly dynamic from the space environment point of view. In particular, the outer Van Allen radiation belt electrons lead to large radiation doses and related hazards. This imposes important constraints on the design, operations, and the lifetime of the spacecraft in the system. Since such constraints have implications both on the technical and the commercial aspects, as well as on the overall reliability of the system, these aspects need to be considered from the early stages of the project.
