Introduction Airborne noise models are widely used for railway systems and most of these are based on 3-D calculations. In contrast, vibration and ground-borne noise levels are more often calculated using a 2-D model, often in the form of a spreadsheet. This is probably because of the lack of commercially available 3-D vibration and ground-borne noise models and also the implication of widely accepted reports and guidelines that levels can be predicted accurately using 2-D models that is, not to say that the widely accepted reports and guidelines recommend 2-D models, but they are often written in a form that allows the conclusion that 2-D models will suffice.
