Abstract Aircraft today rely on a variety of sensors including input from satellites to provide information on their altitude, direction, location, and speed. However, the early pioneers had to develop these instruments to make air travel the safest mode of movement today. The Wright Brothers, the inaugural flight engineers (along with being the first pilots and aircraft designers), relied on the most rudimentary of instruments. Their open-air “cockpit” allowed them full visual access to their surroundings as well as auditory monitoring of their propeller and powerplant. In addition, their “cockpit” (they were laying down on the wing) had a stop watch, engine tachometer, and anemometer (for measuring air velocity).
