Robotic systems were first used at the nuclear fusion research project JET in the early 90’s to re-configure and maintain the many complex and delicate in-vessel components. The complex nature of the in-vessel environment and the many remote maintenance tasks required the development of highly flexible robotic systems that relied on having a person ‘in-the-loop’ together with operating methodologies that considered all aspects of the plant and maintenance task. This approach has now been successfully used for the development of remote handling (robotic) systems at both Dounreay in the development of the ‘Shaft Intervention Platform’ and for fuel debris retrieval at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors.
