Abstract This paper describes the methods and equipment developed by the Communications Satellite Corporation to perform measurements on the RF subsystem of communications satellites in orbit. As communications satellites have increased in capacity and complexity, in-orbit measurement techniques have evolved from simple evaluation type manual measurements to sophisticated computer driver measurements. The equipment described was used to perform in-orbit testing of the INTELSAT and COMSTAR spacecraft and to measure flux density for saturation, spacecraft e.i.r.p., antenna patterns, beam isolation, gain transfer characteristics, gain-to-noise temperature ratio, receiver local oscillator frequencies, traveling wave tube turn-on transients, in-band and out-of-band frequency response, and cross polarization. In addition, a new system presently being developed for the INTELSAT V in-orbit tests will be briefly discussed.
