Timing optimization follows a strictly ‘top-down’ approach. This means that the scheduling level is analyzed and optimized first, followed only then by optimizing at the code level. If one were to start directly at the code level, they would run the risk of spending a lot of time on code optimizations that improve the runtime at a point that is not critical at all.

The optimization of memory usage is, in a way, orthogonal to the mentioned levels.

This chapter imparts a lot of expert knowledge, which can be applied in the conception/design phase of embedded projects on the one hand and on the other hand can be extremely helpful in case of acute timing problems. A ‘roadmap of runtime optimization’ in form of a flowchart completes the chapter.
