Abstract Gas turbines are analyzed in this chapter. The two main types, namely, axial and radial inflow turbines are thoroughly analyzed. Axial turbines are normally employed in industrial gas turbines as well as aero engines. Radial inflow turbines are used in small power plants like turbochargers or superchargers as well as auxiliary power plants (APU). Layouts, velocity triangles, and plots for expansion processes in turbines on T-s diagrams are successively handled for both types of turbines. The main three parameters of flow, enthalpy drop coefficients together with the degree of reaction are defined. Both impulse and reaction axial flow turbines are discussed. Different cooling techniques are also introduced. The chapter ends with explanation of matching procedure between compressors and turbines. Two cases are examined, namely, turbine driving both compressor and load as well as turbine driving the load only.
