This chapter examines the structure and composition of the solar system from the perspective of scientific space exploration and commercial exploitation. It postulates that future solar trade routes will run along water resources, much like the early spread of humans across the world along rivers. The chapter covers the inner solar system with a focus on the potential for resource utilisation on the Moon, asteroids, comets, Mars and the dwarf planet Ceres.
