Flameholders are a key component in ramjet combustor. They are designed to increase airflow turbulence and therefore turbulent recirculation ensuring efficient combustion within a short distance, anchoring and maintaining the flame stable. Flameholders create an eddying region that provides enough residence time for fuel and air to mix and burn, preventing the flame from being blown out. Their geometry should allow the rising of stable eddies preventing, at the same time, excessive drag increase; a proper flameholder configuration is mandatory to maximize the ramjet performance.
