Scientifically analyzing the circulation patterns and meteorological conditions for occurrence of aircraft icing and reasonably forecasting the intensity of aircraft icing contribute to reducing aviation accidents and ensuring flight safety of aircraft. The circulation patterns and meteorological conditions under which 18 aircraft icing cases occurred in southwestern China from 2018 to 2020 were analyzed based on ERA5 reanalysis data. Moreover, the forecast accuracies of commonly used several forecast algorithms of aircraft icing (icing index (Ic index), improved Ic index, service central d’exploitation de la mereorolgie index with vertical velocity (SCEM(VV) index), and research applications program (RAP) algorithm) in southwestern China were assessed. Then, the spatial distribution of icing zones was discussed. Results show that the southwesterly flow, westerly trough, and cold frontal passage are all circulation patterns that are conducive to the occurrence of aircraft icing, and aircraft icing cases caused by the southwesterly flow are most common. The Ic index is the algorithm with the optimal forecast results among the four forecast algorithms. By using the Ic index, the spatial distribution of icing zones can be intuitively delineated, thus providing reference for aircraft to fly out of the icing zones.
