Abstract Microprocessor systems are efficient tools for the control of immobilized enzyme reactors and similar biochemical processes. The implementation of a well adapted control system requires the definition of a suitable process model, and the design of a correctly structured software architecture. Basic operations in chemical reactor engineering are reactor start-up, steady-state regulation, and shut-down commands. This paper presents the principles of optimized control policies for these operations. The implementation of the control algorithms on a microprocessor system is then discussed. Experimental results clearly show improved process performances, with respect to traditional electronic or electromechanical controllers.
