The existing Over-the-Shoulder (OTS) launch technologies commonly adopt a control method based on aerodynamic force combined thrust vectoring, while pure aerodynamic control method for air-to-air missiles is relatively rare. This paper proposes a pure aerodynamic control scheme for unpowered rapid flipping. Wind tunnel tests were conducted to study the static aerodynamic characteristics of the air-to-air missile at various fin angles besides the dynamic aerodynamic characteristics at different frequencies. The radial basis function (RBF) neural network was employed to model the aerodynamic forces, and flight simulation was conducted to verify the feasibility of the rapid-flipping scheme. The results indicate that fin deflection generates longitudinal aerodynamics that contribute to the process of the flipping motion, and the dynamic damping characteristics are beneficial for maintaining attitudes stable when the flip has completed. The process of rapid flipping and reorientation takes only 1.9 s, successfully validating the feasibility of the proposed scheme for rapid flipping maneuvers, and confirming that the control law employed at the end of the flipping motion effectively mitigates divergence issues for angle of attack. The work presented in this paper holds some reference value for improving the OTS launch method of the next-generation air-to-air missiles.
