Automation technology does not have a purpose of its own, but rather aims to perform tasks and, in doing so, generate an increase in added value for the application.
For this reason, the focus of this chapter is on the question as to how automation technology has the ability to generate value in a meaningful way. The following questions will be the subject of a closer look:
What is value creation through automation?
What examples of value creation through automation can be identified?
How can automation technology be methodically analyzed and designed with a focus on benefits and value creation?
How can the capabilities of an automated system be aligned with a potential business perspective?
This chapter presents two examples of different methods that can be used to analyze and present the value of an automated product or system. Based on value analyses and promises, it is possible to estimate the added value of new technical capabilities and derive development priorities.
