Abstract In order to reveal driving performance in different foggy conditions, the current study addressed the issue utilizing a driving simulator-based method to achieve vehicle operating in foggy conditions under driver-vehicle-environment closed system. A number of different instructions and speed feedback mechanisms were tested in order to determine how drivers react when driving in varying levels of fog. In view of combination of three influencing factors (speed indicator, speed meter and keeping lane), speed choice and driving behavior characteristics were analyzed in 500, 200, 80, 50 and 30 m visibilities. The results show that: With the visibility reducing, the vehicle speed is increased at first, then decreased trend, the actual speed and expect speed mismatch; reducing visibility has few effect on lane keep ability except when visibility is 30 m; when visibility is 80 m, there is highest average speed and lane maintain rate.
