Traffic jams often occur at traffic control points located at adjacent intersections. One proposed solution is to establish coordinated traffic control. The vehicle flow at each intersection is managed by an agent acting as the traffic controller. This study conducts an experiment with two traffic controllers at two nearby intersections, managed by a master agent and a slave agent. A coordination algorithm is developed to synchronize the timing of the traffic lights so that the timing at the slave agent can be adjusted according to vehicle arrivals from the master agent. On the main road, the agent located where many vehicles enter can be designated as the master agent, while the agent subsequently passed by these vehicles can be designated as the slave agent. This coordinated traffic control can be implemented with a microcontroller-based system and simulated using Matlab’s SimEvents. By applying this timing coordination, the average waiting time for most vehicles to receive a green signal can be reduced to a quarter of the cycle time, effectively reducing the likelihood of traffic congestion.
